March 1999 Meeting
Online Banking Technology at Fleet Financial
Group
Speaker: Barry Donnelly, Systems Manager, Online Banking Development
Team
Fleet Technology Solutions
As consumers, most of us have heard of Online Banking from advertising campaigns. But
from an IT perspective, how does it really work? This month's presentation features
speakers from Fleet Financial Group who will talk about Fleet PC Banking and Fleet Web
Banking. They will address the following questions: What is the technology behind the
scenes of these applications? How do the various pieces work together? How has the bank
worked to maximize the convenience of transactions, while still maintaining the security
you would expect of a bank?
As you can imagine, there is a lot of technology going on in the background to support
all the functions of PC Banking. Some involve the use of Managing Your Money (R), a
well-known desktop package you get when you sign up - so there's the custom interface from
that to Fleet's systems. There are the electronic portals for the desktop package and
Fleet's Web server, with all the security they require. There's the Web server and its
design. Then there are the systems that store and process transfers, do the bill-paying
through the Automated Clearing House, and perform the account lookups - each of these has
to interact flawlessly with the main accounting systems that the regular Branch and
Customer Service staff would use if you were there in one of Fleet's buildings. Come here
how all these systems were made to work together, from your desktop to the master balance
file containing your Money Market Account!
